The situation today

Air quality today is largely measured by fixed official stations. These stations are expensive and few in number. It is hard to see point-to-point variation in a city, local pollution around industry and changes in noise.

Entsense-WX aims to close this gap with low-cost, multi-point, complementary measurement.

How it works, in four steps

Pick a step to follow the data from the field to the center.

Step 01

Sensor node

Measurement, fault check, confidence score

Step 02

LoRa / LTE-M

Sent to the center

Step 03

Step 04

Alerts

Operating principle
  • The node reads the sensors.
  • The node performs drift and fault checks on the device and adds a confidence score to the measurement.
  • Where coverage exists, it sends directly to the center via LTE-M/NB-IoT.
  • Where there is no coverage or the link is lost, it relays through neighboring nodes over a LoRa mesh of at least 3 hops.
  • The center stores and verifies the data and generates a risk map and alerts.

If the connection to the center is lost, the node stores at least 72 hours of data and transmits it when the connection returns.

Risk-based sampling

The measurement frequency is not fixed; it changes with the risk status. Normally measurements are infrequent; when a leading indicator is seen, it switches to high frequency within 60 seconds. Routine data reaches the center with a delay of at most 15 minutes.

Key features

All features

The current prototype can perform the following measurements:

  • PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10 particulate measurement
  • CO and NO2
  • Total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and estimated eCO2
  • Temperature, humidity and pressure
  • Light
  • Sound level (monitoring changes in noise level)

Rainfall, wind, soil moisture and tilt will be connected through external sensors over RS485.

System components

System components
ComponentFunction
Sensor nodeTakes the measurement, performs drift and fault checks on the device and adds a confidence score.
LoRa meshWhere there is no coverage, carries data through neighboring nodes over a mesh of at least 3 hops.
LTE-M/NB-IoT connectionDirect transmission to the center where coverage exists (GSM in the prototype; will move to this module).
CenterStores and verifies data, generates a risk map and alerts.
External sensorsRainfall, wind, soil moisture, tilt; over RS485.
Integration

Integration

Rainfall, wind, soil moisture and tilt sensors will be connected over RS485. An open interface is being left for institutional systems and municipal platforms such as digital twins.

Outputs and reporting

  • Risk level (0-100, four severity levels), basis, forecast confidence and recommended action stages
  • Regional risk map
  • Tiered notification
  • Dashboard
  • Open interface (API) for institutional systems
  • Alerts when thresholds are exceeded; alerts go only to institution-approved recipients

Open data publishing is not planned; data sharing depends on the protocol to be agreed with the institution.

Installation and support

Installation

Installation on existing poles is planned; no new poles will be needed. Installation time has not yet been measured and will be measured in the pilot application.

Installation time varies by product and site.

Support, maintenance and warranty

  • Remote update is planned; OTA success target of at least 95%.

Data and security

  • For sound measurement only the sound level is recorded; there is no speech recording.
  • The company holds an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate.
  • At least 72 hours of data is stored on the node.
Areas of use
  • Municipalities and environmental agencies
  • Monitoring of local pollution around industry
